Jane's journey
My journey with cancer started with my mother being diagnosed with Grade Two Breast cancer at the age of 55. I was 22 and had just finished university - she had "sat" on a lump in her breast for over six months. I remember crying when she agreed to have a single mastectomy. I remember the bright red marks left by the radiation treatment and how little she smiled over that time. I married and left for Europe. At St Paul's I heard she had secondaries and had been walking on a broken leg for three months. The cancer had spread to her spine. She bravely wore her disease - I use to tease her about being "legal drug addict" doped up with morphine for the pain and she died quietly and with dignity in 1990.
My lump appeared December 1993. I did not "sit on it" - I was demanding explanations from Medical Specialists the very next day. Christmas eve the "dreaded verdict came" - breast cancer at 33 years old. Thank god they didn't keep me waiting too long for the diagnosis. My medical family and friends encouraged me to undergo surgery (lumpectomy), chemotherapy (lost all my hair) and radiotherapy (made some good mates). These treatments saved me from falling further down the "cancer cliff"- but it was the complementary treatments and self care information (mainly gleaned from Bernie Siegel's book "Life, Medicine and Miracles") that helped me climb the cliff again and be able to see my life from new heights.
I designed the sevices so you can "shortcut the time it takes you to access skills, treatments and tools which made a difference to my recovery and I have since discovered are SCIENTIFICALLY PROVEN to reduce your healing time and enhance wellbeing. I can guarantee it will make a difference to yours. I have used each of the treatments and tools myself - but I did wish that I could have done it in a shorter period of time in a nurturing setting.
